Get an Employee Fitness to Work Medical (fit note) online from a GMC-registered UK GP. Same-day certificates for low-risk workplaces.
If you’re unwell and unable to work, our online GP service offers a quick and straightforward solution. In the UK, you can self-certify sick leave for up to 7 days without a note — beyond that, most employers require a GP-issued fit note. Book an appointment with an online GP who will assess your request and provide a sick note where clinically appropriate.
Fit Note for Work vs. Employee Fitness to Work Medical — which do I need? This service is for when you’re currently unwell and need documentation for time off work. If you’re ready to return to work and need confirmation you’re fit to do so, see our Employee Fitness to Work Medical instead.

Your doctor may issue a Sick (Fit) Note during the consultation if it is clinically appropriate.
A sick note, also known as a fit note, is a medical certificate issued by a GP confirming that you are not fit for work or may need adjustments due to illness.
Yes. Our online GP service allows you to request a sick note following a remote medical consultation, where clinically appropriate.
The duration depends on your medical condition and the GP’s clinical assessment. Notes may be issued for short-term or longer periods if justified. Being an online service, we see ourselves as a stop gap for short term illnesses when its hard to see your own regular NHS GP. If you need longer than 2 weeks, we would expect you to see your own GP.
No. Sick notes are issued at the GP’s clinical discretion and only where medically appropriate following an assessment. You could instead be given an “amended note” which states that you can work but with amended duties, hours or workplace adaptation. You are paying for a consultation with an online GP for an assessment, not for a sick note.
Yes. Digital sick notes (fit notes) are legally valid in the UK and are accepted by employers. A fit note is advisory rather than legally binding, meaning it provides medical advice about your fitness for work. While employers are expected to consider it, the final decision on workplace arrangements rests with the employer.
In some circumstances, a GP may backdate a sick note based on clinical judgement, but this is not guaranteed.
Yes — a fit note from an online GP is treated the same as one from your regular GP for SSP purposes, provided you meet your employer’s eligibility criteria. Check your contract or ask your HR department for your specific SSP terms.
