A Fitness to Work assessment offers medical advice on an individual’s capacity to work and any adjustments that may be required due to illness or injury. Also known as a fit note, this document confirms your assessment and states that you have partially or fully recovered from the health issues affecting your work — reassuring your employer that you’re fit to start or return to duty, with guidance on a gradual return if needed. Assessments are carried out efficiently and in line with UK medical standards.
Note: This service is suitable for low-risk, non-hazardous workplaces only. See the FAQ below for excluded occupations.
Fit Note for Work vs. Sick Note for Work — which do I need? This certificate confirms you’re fit to start or return to work (with any needed adjustments). If you’re currently unwell and need documentation for time off work instead, see our Sick (Fit) Note for Work service.

You can confidently resume work or embark on a new job, assured that your health and capability to perform have been certified.
An Employee Fitness to Work Medical, also known as a fit note, is a document that confirms your assessment and states that you have partially or fully recovered from the health issues that had been affecting your work. It assures your employer that your health issues no longer pose a risk to yourself or others in the workplace and that you are fit to start or return to work. The letter may also provide guidance to your employer on resuming your work duties on a gradual basis if necessary.
Please note that our Employee Fitness to Work Medicals are suitable for low-risk workplaces and non-hazardous environments only. High-risk occupations, such as plant operator, scaffolding worker, road worker (particularly motorways), traffic marshal, slinger, banksman, signaller, employee working at height, mechanical handling equipment worker and fork lift truck driver as well as tunnel and confined space worker, require in-person assessments for specific tests. We are unable to provide fitness certificates for these industries. Please consult with the appropriate authorities or occupational health professionals for the necessary evaluations.
For new jobs we will require a summary of your NHS GP records called a Summary Care Record (SCR). Please request this ahead of your appointment to avoid delays in issuing your certificate.
In most cases, your certificate is issued and sent by email the same day as your consultation, provided the doctor confirms it’s clinically appropriate.
Yes. If a gradual return is clinically appropriate, your doctor can include recommendations for this in your certificate — for example, reduced hours or adjusted duties for an initial period.
Our certificates are issued by GMC-registered UK doctors and are accepted by employers of all sizes. If your employer has a specific occupational health policy, it’s worth checking this covers third-party or telehealth assessments before booking.
This is uncommon, but if it happens, ask your employer for the specific reason in writing. If there’s a genuine error, we can help correct it. If the certificate is accurate and complete but still disputed, you may want to raise this with your employer’s HR department or, in the UK, ACAS.
Simple. Fast. Efficient. We have streamlined the process.
